Nazaré
It took one wave. In fact, not an ordinary wave. A giant wave emerging from the beach Praia do Norte, surfed by Hawaiian surf legend Garrett McNamara in 2011. This breath-taking 30-meter-high wave would change forever the fate of a picturesque coastal town known as Nazaré. Or as surfers like to call it: Naza!
Epic waves
Why are the waves so incredibly big in Nazaré?
Challenge
The world’s best big wave athletes are returning to Portugal for the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge presented by Jogos Santa Casa, which will take place some time between November 15 2021 and March 31 2022.
The view
The half-moon shaped beach of Nazaré is one of the most picturesque beaches in Portugal, seducing its visitors with colourful beach huts, friendly dry fish sellers and dazzling natural beauty.
Love at first sight
Beautifully located at the top of Nazaré (Sítio district), Ladeira swing offers a truly unrivalled view over the endlessness of the Atlantic, the beach of Nazaré, the surfers challenging the ocean and the impeccably aligned white houses. Some say that Ladeira swing is a door to paradise.
Tribute
Fish drying in Nazaré is a remarkable trade mark of local identity. This project was developed by the City Hall of Nazaré, including three main centres: fish drying, interpretation centre and fish treatment.
Memory
Surfers of the giant waves are used to walls of water which are over 20 meters-high: this is what they look for in Nazaré in thunderstorm days. And it is in the Fort of S. Miguel Arcanjo in Nazaré that are exposed the surfboards offered by these surfers who venture in the waves of the Praia do Norte.
