The historical origins of Visconde quarter date back to the creation of the Fortress of Peniche in the 16th century. The quarter was strategically placed in a defence zone and it evolved along the fertile seaside lands.
In the beginning of the 20th century, preserved food industry began to flourish in Peniche, attracting many outsiders to the town, especially from the north of the country. However, Visconde quarter has always been a poor popular quarter, known as "the quarter of the starving".
Inhabited almost exclusively by fishermen and their families, the houses of Visconde quarter became however increasingly better, a symbol of a deeply struggling people. In fact, the architectural design of the quarter is particularly impressive. The colourful picturesque houses are located upon the cliffs with an unbelievable view over the Atlantic. There are many community areas, tanks for washing clothes, wooden benches or terraces to gaze into the sea. Everybody knows everybody and it can be utterly felt a cheerful atmosphere in this iconic quarter of Peniche.
