The brand TOINO ABEL was founded by Nuno Henriques in 2010 in Berlin. The designer moved to the Portuguese country side near Alcobaça in 2013 to work side by side with the old remaining craftspeople. This is a sustainable brand that has rescued the timeless art of reed basketry. A passionate manifesto against fast fashion !
In 2017 TOINO ABEL commissioned artist Dinis Santos to document the creative process through his lenses. It took a whole year as some of the tasks are seasonal or performed once a year. The result was a 12-minute documentary, with no music, no voice nor interview. (see above)
While the Portuguese landscape is being transformed into an eucalyptus monoculture, TOINO ABEL is moving in the opposite direction, providing the depopulated countryside with an activity that makes sense.
Weaving the way to the future !
