The superb regional sweets of Abrantes were born in the female convents of the region, namely in the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça. In fact, the convents in Portugal were true labs of gastronomical creation.
The main sweet specialities are “palha de Abrantes”, “tigeladas”, honey breads, lime-shaped sweets, sweet chestnuts or “mulatos”. However, "Palha de Abrantes" is a deep-rooted symbol of the city. The name "palha", meaning straw, takes us back to those ancient times when the so-called "straw markets" were held at the main squares of the city.
This delight is made of almond, egg yolk, covered by egg threads, slightly toasted in a very hot oven. This sweet speciality can be tasted in every patisserie of Abrantes, playing a major role during the National Fair of Traditional Confectionery.
The awarded Chef Fernando Correia is the representative of Palha de Abrantes and the Ambassador of Portuguese Regional and Convent-based Confectionery.
