The cities of Covilhã and Guarda are now finally reconnected by railway. The Beira Baixa railway line is one of the most ancient - and also most stunning - railway connections in Portugal.
Officially launched by King D. Carlos on September 6th 1891, this historical railway line connects the cities of Entroncamento and Guarda, via Abrantes, Vila Velha de Ródão, Castelo Branco, Fundão and Covilhã.
This is a journey across a deeply diversified territory: along the Tagus River via Vila Velha de Ródão and the foothills of Gardunha and Estrela Mountains. All the way to the highest city in Portugal: Guarda. Beira Baixa railway line has been modernised with a significant reduction of carbon emissions and noise level. The long-awaited connection between the cities of Covilhã and Guarda was finally reestablished. A major step in the economical development of this region.
