In 1897, Duarte Ferreira created the first forge in the village of Tramagal, 5 km away from Abrantes. This would be the beginning of the metallurgical factory named after its founder who carried out a true social revolution. The iconic producer of the trucks Berliet-Tramagal that employed 1 thousand workers is an enlightening example of entrepreneurship with social concerns.
The work of Eduardo Duarte Ferreira, the visionary founder of Duarte Ferreira Metallurgical Factory, is an example of the so-called "welfare capitalism". Great industry owners had social concerns about their workers, providing housing, schools, kindergartens and social insurances.
This metallurgical factory produced several agricultural artefacts and the iconic Berliet-Tramagal trucks. It was the greatest light metallurgical factory in Portugal that operated until 1997.
Opened in 2017, Duarte Ferreira Metallurgical Museum honours the vision and the inspiring project of its founder, son of a boatman of the Tagus. But it also pays homage to several generations of workers who were the cornerstone of such meaningful factory. A story of economical development based on social consciousness. Basically, based on the heart-felt respect for hard-working hands.
