Projected by the architects Raul César Caldeira and Albertino Crujeiro Galvăo Roxo, the iconic Cine-Teatro Avenida, in Castelo Branco, is a charming example of Modernist architecture. It opened its doors to the public on October 2nd 1954. In 1999, after a violent fire the theatre was reborn with different modern features, but maintaining its founding essence.
The theatre has capacity for 703 persons and on the underground floor several exhibitions are held. On this same floor an old noria was recovered, which existed before 1954, the date of inauguration of the Cine-Teatro Avenida. The noria, in the centre of this multipurpose room, can be seen as an unusual element, but it creates a quite charismatic atmosphere.
Managed by the municipal project Cultura Vibra, Cine-Teatro Avenida is the stage of a handful of cultural events: theatre plays, concerts, dance presentations and many others.
