Bordallo Pinheiro was the most inventive ceramist in Portugal of all times. A true master of his art. His timeless works mirror the very essence of the Portuguese soul. Deeply inspired by Nature, his colourful home ware and decor pieces are a key to the Portuguese identity.
Bordallo Pinheiro Factory of Artistic Earthenware was founded in 1884 in Caldas da Rainha, originally under the name “Fábrica de Faianças das Caldas da Rainha” (The Earthenware Factory of Caldas da Rainha). It has been, for over a century, responsible for the design of a gallery of utilitarian and decorative ceramic pieces that have become a worldwide artistic reference.
Bordallo Pinheiro Route in Caldas da Rainha
The City Hall of Caldas da Rainha created the Bordallo Pinheiro Route, as an homage to the unique legacy of this ceramist. Designed to be a walking tour, the tour of Bordallo Pinheiro offers a longer track that takes approximately 2 hours, starting in the train station square across several tourism spots, related to the artist and his work.
This route includes buildings with tile-covered panels and façades, unique human-scale pieces and stories on the life of Bordallo Pinheiro, ending at Bordallo Pinheiro Factory and the museum house Bordallo Pinheiro.
The short tour will last about an hour, showing the giant-scale ceramic pieces. It will also end at Bordallo Pinheiro Factory. Visitors can visit several spots by using the app CityGuide Caldas da Rainha.
