Berlenga archipelago | Peniche

Located opposite to Peniche, the Archipelago consists of 3 groups of small islands: Berlenga Grande (the only inhabited one, that can be visited by boat from Peniche) and the nearby reefs, Estelas and Farilhões-Forcadas; their geological nature is different from that of the Portuguese coast.

The Islands have their particular fauna and flora, with characteristics that make their ecosystem unique in the world, the importance of which was recognised by the creation of the Berlenga Nature Reserve in 1981.

Getting there
Berlenga Pass

Berlenga Pass came into force on June 1st 2022. From that date on, visitors who wish to visit Berlenga island must register online and pay a tourism fee. Adults pay a fee of €3, while children from 6 to 18 years-old and citizens over 65 years-old pay €1,50.

Visitors must previously register online on this website. This digital platform is used for booking the visit and for paying the tourism fee.

Berlenga Pass was created as a means to protect the special ecosystem of Berlenga archipelago. On the other hand, the revenues of the tourism fee will be used in the improvement of the archipelago and development of sustainable energy sources.

Boat trips

Tour operator Viamar has the largest boat - Cabo Avelar Pessoa - travelling to Berlenga. This boat is the only ferry that allows visitors to spend more than 8 hours in the Berlenga archipelago. Tickets can be bought online or at the Viamar ticket office, located in the Peniche marina pier.

There are other local tour operators that organise several activities and experiences, such as dolphin spotting, scuba diving or individual boat trips on boats with glass bottom to watch the sea beneath.

Discovering Berlenga

Located 5,7 miles away from Cape Carvoeiro, the archipelago of Berlengas consists of 3 island groups: Berlenga Grande, and nearby reefs, Estelas and Farilhões-Forcadas, all of them geologically different.

Berlenga Grande, the main island, is 1.500 meters long, 800 meters large and 85 meters high. Its climate is influenced by both Atlantic and Mediterranean weather influences, which make this archipelago a unique ecosystem in the word. The waters are rich in fish and sea mammals, sea plants and other sea organisms, leading to the classification as a Maritime Reserve.

The Berlengas archipelago is a true geological monument, an important testimony of the History of the Earth and the formation of continents and oceans.

Furado Grande, the most impressive grout of Berlenga crosses the whole island,as if it were a natural tunnel 70 meters long and 20 meters high, leading to Cova do Sonho and Furado Pequeno, that can only be reached by low tide. There are dozens of grouts to explore in the whole island, many of them submerged and only reachable by diving.

Ideal for scuba diving fans, diving in Berlenga can be a memorable experience !
